The weekend of 16 and 17 November saw the return of the 38th Havana Marabana – Havana Marathon, a day in which Havana shone once again to celebrate one of the most important days of Cuban sport. This legendary race through the Cuban capital is the most important sports day on the Caribbean island, on the day on which the Day of Physical Culture and Sport is also celebrated. This year’s edition also marks Havana’s 505th anniversary, which is 16 November, and the Marabana is included in the programme of cultural and sporting events to celebrate this anniversary, which will take place in the city from 2 to 17 November under the slogan Havana lives in me.
In addition, the Marabana – Havana Marathon is certified as a member of the AIMS (World Association of Marathons and Long Distance Races). The Havana Marathon course, which starts and finishes in front of the monumental Capitolio, is the only Cuban course officially certified as an international race registered with the AIMS. This homologation allows participants to establish official marks. Likewise, in 2024, Adidas has once again supplied the clothing for the runners in this race, as it did in 2019.
Like every year, the Marabana – Havana Marathon wanted to involve everyone in its great celebration of Cuban sport. For this reason, the event consists of four different distances: the full marathon through the centre of Havana, a half marathon, a 10km race and a 5km race. The race took in the most iconic places in the Cuban capital, those that captivate its visitors. The marathon ran two laps of a route starting and finishing at the Ramón Font Multipurpose Sports Centre. The route took in the following streets and avenues: Paseo del Prado, Refugio, Zulueta, Av. De las Misiones, Malecón, Calzada, Calle 12, Calle 23, Av. 26, Boyeros, Santa Catalina, Primelles, Vía Blanca, Boyeros, Salvador Allende, Reina and Paseo del Prado.
But what really attracts the participants is the 8 kilometre circuit along the seafront, on the cinematic Malecón. The sound of the waves and the ambient music of the Cuban people are the perfect travelling companions for treasuring memories that will remain in the minds of the participants for life. Because the Malecón sums up the history and daily life of Havana, the best expression of the life of those who live in and fill the Cuban capital with colour.
